Volunteer State Community College will host the Chili/Soup for Books fundraiser in the Carpeted Dining Area of the Wood Campus Center Thursday, March 4, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
The idea for this fundraiser was developed by the Employee Relations Committee to assist Vol State faculty and staff members and their dependents.
Proceeds from this event will go toward a book scholarship fund worth $500.
The book scholarship is through Vol State, and the amount of money awarded may be spent on any textbooks needed by the receiver.
There are nine contestants, as of Feb. 23.
"Last year's event had more than 10 contestants involved, and raised $306," said Lucy Brooks, account clerk for Vol State.
"We hope to have at least that many, if not more, this year," Brooks continued.
Only Vol State faculty may participate in the cooking contest, but students are encouraged to join in with the tasting of the prepared foods.
"For those that would like to participate in the event, but not cook, you may purchase lunch at a cost of $5.
Your meal will include chili or soup, crackers, dessert, and a drink," according to a flyer about the fundraiser.
"A grand prize will be awarded to the Top Chef of the day," according to the flyer.
The prize has not yet been disclosed, but last year's award was a large basket filled with kitchen utensils and non-perishable food items.
Faculty interested in competing may contact Karen Waller at extension 3507, or by e-mail at karen.waller@volstate.edu.
The deadline for entry is Wednesday, March 3.
"We hope to surpass last year's fundraiser with the amount of at least $400-$450," said Regina Pierpaoli, secretary of the testing center.
"We have such a good time sampling and testing the different types of chili and soup, so throw your best chili or soup together and bring it on," Pierpaoli added.
