Last Wednesday, anti-racist activist Tim Wise spoke at Volunteer State Community College about racial and equality matters in today's American society.
Wise stated that the current economic meltdown is creating anxiety among many people. He also noted that people of color are used to the pressure of being on the search for employment.
Wise pointed out that America is a multicultural nation. According to Wise, there is much diversity in America today, and there are still many issues concerning racism, requiring those with racist tendencies to accept the change.
Wise later made the comment that within the next 40 or 50 years, if whites are not the minority, they will only make up about half of the American population.
He proclaimed that America will have to learn to unite.
"In 50 years, the population will not be able to sustain the country economically if there are widespread problems," stated Wise.
"I thought Tim Wise brought a great overview of racial matters within the United States, and even on the stereotypes that may come along with a person of color being a leader in politics," said Vol State student Jace Green.
Vol State student Andrew Howerton said that racism still exists, and even though it is scary to bring up, it still needs to be mentioned.
Wise ended his speech saying that Barack Obama being elected president could be a stepping stone to eventually developing into a more united country.
