Feb. 20, from 1-4 p.m., Volunteer State Community College will house the Literacy Council of Sumner County's Scrabble Challenge Fundraising Event in the carpeted dining room of the Randy and Lois Wood Campus Center.
The event also took place at Vol State in 2005 and 2006.
Due to tornado damage the event could not take place in 2007.
The challenge will consist of three full rounds of Scrabble.
Sumner County's General Sessions Judge Barry Brown will be the official word challenge judge.
The event will be hosted by Demetria Kalodimos, anchor for Channel 4 News.
Each team must be composed of three people, with a registration fee of $90 per team.
Door prizes will be given away during and after the tournament.
The first place team will receive trophies, as well as approximately $50 in gift certificates.
Second place will receive approximately $25 in gift certificates, and third place will receive $10 in gift certificates.
The prizes will be provided by local merchants, restaurants, etc.
One winner will receive a reimbursement of the entry fee.
"We are hoping to raise awareness about literacy needs in this community.
This fundraiser will enable us to continue serving the numerous adults and children in our community that require math and reading assistance," said Margie Anderson, director of LCSC.
"In 2006 we had 24 teams, and hope to have that many again," Anderson continued.
"We offer tutoring in all academic subjects, including reading, reading comprehension, writing, math, as well as G.E.D. preparation and English as a second language," according to literacysumner.org.
"The Literacy Council of Sumner County is a learning and resource center for all ages.
A non-profit organization originally chartered in 1983, our mission is to provide resources, counseling, and tutoring to children, youth, and adults to enhance their skills in all academic areas," according to literacysumner.org.
