Volunteer State Community College's Hispanic Family Night will be Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the Thigpen Library.

"It's our cornerstone effort to outreach to the Hispanic community," said Eric Melcher, coordinator of communications and public relations for Vol State.

The college is making an effort to attract more Hispanic students. This will provide a more diverse landscape on campus.

A diverse learning environment provides multiple benefits to all students. It may collapse negative stereotypes about other cultures, and can better serve to equip students for business in a global marketplace, according to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The event is designed to provide information about the educational opportunities Vol State offers to Hispanic families in Middle Tennessee.

The event welcomes entire families. It can serve as a chance for high school students preparing for college to get familiar with Vol State. Adults looking to improve their English skills can find out about Vol State's English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. There will be refreshments, and plenty of fun is planned to keep children entertained.

Spanish speaking tours of campus will be offered, as well a bilingual staff to answer questions.

Hispanic Family Night is a concentrated effort by Vol State to tap into and enrich the rapidly growing Hispanic population in Middle Tennessee. In Sumner County, the Hispanic population has more than doubled in the last decade.

"I think it's awesome that there is someone out there reaching out to the Hispanic community," said Veronica Acuna, Vol State student.

"We are all here to try to succeed, and everyone could use a helping hand from time to time," continued Acuna.
