Continuing Ed Department is Expanding

The many non-credit courses Volunteer State Community College offers are managed in the Betty Gibson Hall (formerly the 500 Building), through the Continuing Education department.

Though the Continuing Ed department doesn't issue credits, it does issue exam certification (for businesses), licenses (real estate agents, nurses, EMTs), six sigma green belts and black belts (not Karate, these are business training certificates from quality business gurus), and much more.

"We have enrollments of all ages," but mostly have more of an "adult population," said Lisa Haley, director of continuing education.

Continuing Education offers a wide range of classes.

"If you name it, we've probably had it. We've had dog training, ball room dancing, career-skill building, personal improvement, music lessons, ghost hunting, and sign language. We've had bagpipe lessons and bridge lessons," said Haley.

In the Spring and Summer of 2010, Continuing Education is offering: swing dancing lessons, Around The World With Bargain Wines, conversational Japanese, Instant Piano, Just Once Drums, small engine repair, interior decorating, cardio kickboxing, writing life stories, mosaics, and hickory bark seat weaving.

These classes all range from $70 to $110.
"We have one-day workshops, night classes, seminars, four-week classes, six-week classes, et cetera," said Haley. "We try to accommodate."

Continuing Ed is also helps companies and their employees.

"So you have the degree and you need the skills (for your job), we have classes to help people do that," said Haley.

"We do training for companies for their employers, personal enrichment, career skills, and workforce development," Haley added.

Bob Jankiewicz, director of the business and industry institute, is in charge of helping companies and employees further their education.

"If a company has a request, I will find a resource to bring training to them. We can deliver what they're looking for," said Jankiewicz.
