An information session for the summer 2010 study abroad programs was conducted in the Mattox Building at Volunteer State Community College on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
The study abroad programs are offered through the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies (TnCIS), to which Vol State belongs.
Last year 15 students traveled abroad to seven different countries. This year 15 countries are involved, according to Dr. John Espey, dean of the business division.
Students have the option to travel to Austria, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, England, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Scotland, South Africa, or Spain, according to TnCIS's website, www.tncis.org.
Students choose which country they would like to visit based on the college course that is offered there.
Although students may take a course that directly aligns with their major, they are also encouraged to take a course outside of their field of study as an elective.
"There is nothing wrong with traveling overseas and taking an extra course," said Espey.
Students are expected to complete class work (including any tests or papers) just as they would in any other college course.
However, the students will not be confined to a classroom during the entirety of their visit.
"This program is designed to give you cultural immersion, not sequestering," emphasized Espey.
The programs take place over three weeks, except for the trip to Brazil which lasts five weeks.
In order to apply for the program, students must fill out an application and pay the $100 application fee at www.tncis.org.
Each program varies in price and is anywhere from $2745 (Mexico) to $4850 (Italy, the Netherlands, or England). Airfare is included in the package.
"It's three or four times as much if you try to do it yourself," said Espey.
Before applying on TnCIS's website students may apply for a scholarship through Vol State.
Three different scholarships are offered: six $4500 ambassador scholarships for students who have traveled abroad with TnCIS before, eight $4000 scholarships, and 20 $3000 scholarships.

I'd really like to go to England. Cultural immersion is the thing I need to get the fullest knowledge of the language.
