As of this semester at Volunteer State Community College, Lambda has begun to regain members and visibility.
Lambda is a Greek symbol used for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community and has been internationally recognized as so for about a decade.
"For the Greeks, the letter Lambda represented balance, and in physics, it represents energy," said Nancy Blomgren, advisor for the club and associate professor of English.
According to www.lambda.org, "The symbol was originally chosen by the Gay Activists Alliance of New York in 1970. Even though at one time it acquired a strictly male connotation, it is used by both gays and lesbians today."
The club started at Vol State about eight years ago as the Gay/Straight Alliance, and has been off and on since.
"We hope to make people more aware of the club and increase education and support on these issues," said Blomgren.
Right now, the club has about eight members on their mailing list, and they are constantly on the lookout for more.
Lambda hopes to do some summer work, planning events and preparing for the fall semester.
"We want do to something with the Tennessee Equality Project," said Blomgren, "and have them come on campus and talk about the legislative issues."
They are also considering having a panel of clergy to come and speak about issues in the church.
"This campus needs diversity," said student Steven Cox. "The Lambda club is really a good opportunity for those students that might feel like they have nowhere to go to talk about their sexuality."
Making people aware of the club is a big goal for Lambda.
"We want people to understand and be educated on these topics," said Blomgren. "We really hope our upcoming events in the fall will bring interest and make people aware of what's going on at this campus."
