The purposes of the SGA include supporting all clubs and activities on campus, assessing and allocating fees, supporting school spirit, providing training experience in general principles of democratic government, promoting student rights and responsibilities, supporting cooperation between students, faculty, and administration, and nurturing leadership potential of all SGA members, as well as several other things.
According to its constitution, "Any person who is currently registered for one or more VSCC class during any given semester shall be entitled to all the rights and benefits allowed under this Constitution and shall be entitled to vote in SGA elections."
The SGA consists of a legislation committee, including senate, executive and judiciary branches. The senate includes representatives from student organizations and at-large representatives of the student body. The executive branch consists of the SGA president, vice president, secretary of the state, attorney general, and secretary of the treasury. The judiciary branch is made up of no less than four members of the SGA, not including the president.
The SGA wants to change several things in its constitution.
"We have revised the stipends for SGA members, increased the amount of money clubs receive and have clarified job responsibilities," said current SGA president Lindsey Overhalser. "We have removed a committee that had a redundant position, made minor changes to good-standing requirements for clubs and changed senator rules."
"I think it's beautiful, a work of art," said Dusty Good, senior senator.
On Monday, April 13,the SGA will hand out copies of the revised constitution at its meeting for members to overview and approve for the following Monday. All students are welcome to attend the meeting at 12:30 p.m.
