On Monday, March 30 and Tuesday, March 31 the student body has the opportunity to vote on an SGA referendum.

The SGA referendum proposes that the current SGA fee that all students pay as part of their tuition be raised from its current amount of $3 to $5.

Now there are only three options that we as a student body face. Vote yes. Vote no. Or not care enough to vote at all.

Each choice is valid, there is no right or wrong decision. But each does have its own unique merits and consequences.

A vote for no means that the SGA fee remains the same and that we each have an extra two dollars in our pockets. Something that can't be underestimated in these times of financial hardships and economic struggles, especially with tuition hikes looming on the horizon.

A vote for yes means that the SGA gets a $2 per student increase in its budget. A budget that goes toward campus events, VSCC club seed money, book stipends, and scholarships.
Not just on this campus but for the satellite locations like Livingston as well.

If the vote is yes then multiply that $2 by the 7,000 students paying the fee. The SGA potentially stand to gain around an additional $14,000.

There are many different ideas being discussed on how to spend the extra money that the referendum would generate if passed. There is a story in this issue about them.

Some of the proposed ideas are, an increase in the SGA budget for the Livingston campus, increased seed money for the clubs here on the Vol State main campus, increased scholarships and book stipends just to name a few.

The final option is to not care enough to show up and vote at all. While this option may save twenty or thirty minutes of your day it also has the consequence that all apathetic choices share.

It means that your voice isn't heard, that your wishes and opinions aren't taken in to consideration. It means that no matter what you want or prefer, you'll be stuck with the outcome of a vote that you could have influenced. It means that someone else gets to make your decision for you, someone who doesn't know you or how you feel or what you care about.

Polls will be open Monday, March 30 and Tuesday, March 31 from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. So show up and vote.

Or don't and let someone else decide for you.
