Don't stop now
Issue date: 3/16/09 Section: Opinion
Before we left for spring break, our Student Government Association hosted the SGA Forum.
This event happens every semester. Last semester was absolutely embarrassing. There were barely any students there and less than 10 questions were asked.
This semester though was a different story.
There were students who actually got up and asked the administration questions.
Also, SGA allowed for anonymous questions to be submitted. This is where the bulk of the questions came from.
We were very surprised at The Settler to see students getting involved.
We are always encouraging you to stand up, let your voice be heard, blah, blah, blah.
Well, thanks for listening!
A lot of crisis could be in our school's future. With looming budget decisions, it will be interesting to see what our administration chooses to do.
It is great that the students actually cared enough to ask some questions.
But, we cannot stop here.
If we just continue on with our regular ways, the administration will forget that we have a voice. They will forget that we actually care.
We must be a presence to the administration daily.
Don't wait for the next forum to find out what the hell is going on.
Ask them whenever you want.
You are the student and you deserve to know the inner workings of your school.
Do not let them give you the run around. A lot of the school's records are public records.
This means that anyone can see them. Including you.
We are all worried about higher education's future.
The administration has not made any decisions about what will be cut, who will be cut or whatever other things could be affected.
They say that it is too soon. They do not know how much money we will be losing. They don't want to say one thing and be wrong when the final word comes down.
That is a good thing. But this means that soon, these decisions will be made.
Will we be included?
Only if we make ourselves included. You have the right to have some say on these decisions. Just do it. Find out how you can be involved.
