Financial aid check mania
Issue date: 1/26/09 Section: Opinion
We all know that institutions will have their quirks. But what about when the quirks get in the way of our education?
Volunteer State Community College gave out students' financial aid checks this past Friday.
It is great that our school has so many ways of helping students obtain money for school.
So why do we have to wait a week into school to get them?
Middle Tennessee State University students received their checks the first day of classes.
With the delay on our checks, many students were left without books. Those waiting on checks usually do not have the money to pay for their textbooks.
But, that doesn't seem to phase Vol State. We just have to go without our books.
Well the teachers cannot help that the school gives the checks out so late.
And why should they have to delay their lesson plans just for us?
They shouldn't.
Just like we should not have to wait for our money.
Yes, students could have gone to the library and copied their homework. But that cost some money too. Yes, not much but you still have to find some change to get copies made.
So now, you have students falling behind the first week of school.
Why would you want your students to fall behind in the beginning? Let alone fall behind at all.
It is understood that the school does not want to hand out the money if the student is not attending class.
Wouldn't it make more sense to give the checks out, then verify attendance with the threat of paying the money back if the student bails class?
Why would a student want to pay all that money back? If they are attending school and getting financial aid, don't you think they have an interest in school?
Plus, now the students have their checks and their attendance verified, they can still ditch class and blow their money. Some teachers are going to stop taking roll now anyway.
It all just seems like a stupid process. It puts both teachers and students in a situation that is not always easy to solve.
This school should really think of an alternative plan. But who knows when we will see that happen.
