Cheerleading squad is back just in time for basketball season

Volunteer State Community College
has not had a cheerleading squad
since it came back for a year in 2004.
Before 2004, the squad had not been
active since the 70s. Now, the team is
back.
This year, there are thirteen girls
on the squad. Members include, Alicia
Witt, the captain, Victoria Pedem, the
co-captain, Trelonda Scruggs, Paige
Alexander, Hailey Howland, Bethany
Brooks, Ashley Winfrey, Andrea Price,
Marissa Woods, Marcaela Hendricks,
Sarah Townsend, Ashley Loftis, and
Elizabeth Pride.
Coach Bobby Hudson is the advisor
this year. There were no tryouts
because no one really knew, to have actual
tryouts would have required girls
that they didn't have at the time.
The dance coordinator this year is
Stacy Womelduff, who is also the coordinator
for the Pioneer dance team.
The cheerleaders will have about
two to three practices a week. They
will cheer at all home games, for basketball,
softball and baseball. Their
first appearance fittingly, was at homecoming.
A lot of these girls are coming
straight out of high school, where they
cheered as well. There seems to be a
lot of people doubting them according
to the girls.
"Everyone is doubting us. We want
to show them that we work hard for
this," said Loftis.
Finally, the squad, as any other club
is required to do a service project.
"We will do as many as need to,"
said Hudson. Their first service project
will be Nov. 22. They will be feeding
the homeless.
