Volunteer State Community College's annual student publication, Squatter's Rites, won second place in the American Scholastic Press Association for the third year in a row.

The American Scholastic Press Association award is given out annually. Thousands of high schools and colleges compete for the award by entering publications including yearbooks, art and fictional literature.

"Squatter's Rites is an outlet for student creativity," said Elkin Brown, one of the publication's faculty advisors.

Elkin Brown described the lengthy process of compiling the material that was sent in to win the award.

Brown said that Squatter's Rites starts taking in graphic, fine, and literary art at the beginning of the school year, and set a deadline before Christmas.

After all of the student contributions have been collected, a panel of judges, all of whom are students, go through the submitted material and decide which pieces will go into the magazine to be published at the end of the Spring semester.

"Winning the award brings accolades to the practicum. It will hopefully bring more attention to [Squatter's Rites] so that we can receive more submissions of both written and visual art," said Erin Haynes, layout and art editor for Squatter's Rites 2007.

Haynes is the Managing Editor of this year's publication.

This year's Squatter's Rites staff which includes Caitlin Bush, Jesse Stewart and Bethany Rockwood is compiling material for the 2008 edition of Squatter's Rites.

"Having [Squatter's Rites] win for the third time just makes this next publication all the more exciting...we have a standard to live up to and a great goal to achieve," said Haynes.
