The Volunteer State Community College music department will be releasing a Christmas CD along with performing the Winter Jam holiday concert Dec. 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m.
It will be held on the first floor of the Amber Leaf on the Square Restaurant located at 112 Public Square, Gallatin, Tenn.
According to James Story, associate professor of music and department chair, the show is not exclusively Christmas music, which is why they are calling it the Winter Jam.
"It's going to be an eclectic of R&B and jazz, in addition to some seasonal favorites," said Story.
Vol State's commercial music ensemble, the Showstoppers, the Vol State Singers, guitar ensemble, jazz ensemble and alumni guests will perform.
Story said they are still securing which alumni will be present.
Lynn Peterson, assistant professor of music, said the Showstoppers, commercial music ensemble, Vol State Singers, and private lesson students will be featured on the CD.
"It's a pretty heavy undertaking. It's easy though because it involves all the teachers. We do our own section and when we put it together it looks like a huge production," said Peterson.
The commercial music ensemble will accompany the singers and both vocal groups.
They will also present their own pieces. Some students will perform solos.
There is a suggested admission donation of $5 which will aid the Music Department Scholarship Fund.
There is also a suggested donation of $10 for a CD and admission.
"The receipts we get from the CD and show enables our music students to receive scholarships from semester to semester," said Story.
The CD will feature traditional Christmas music, as well as original pieces written by the students, Peterson said.
The CD will be for sale at the show and through the holiday season.
JT Kemper, bass player for the commercial music ensemble, said that he is looking forward to working in the studio.
"I like being under pressure. I love being in a studio making music. The best thing is getting to hear it when it is completed because you know all the work that went into it," said Kemper.
Kemper will play bass on the recordings. He also said there is a possibility that he will write a Christmas song with fellow commercial music ensemble player, Aaron Keen.
Both musicians will join the others to perform the Winter Jam.
According to Story, the community really supports this event. Last year there were about 600 people in attendance.
"It is an opportunity for the community, parents, faculty, and students to see the talent we have assembled in our music program," said Story.
