Students at Volunteer State Community College may notice art in the lobby of the Thigpen Library. This is the home for Vol State's art gallery.
Sue Mulcahy and Claire Hampton are the full time faculty for the art department. Matt Donetelli is the gallery director. Along with Mulcahy and Hampton, Donetteli makes the final decision about which works are featured in the gallery.
Mulcahy, Hampton and Donetteli choose from a variety of professional artists within the southeast region. The artists are featured by invitation only.
Mulcahy said that they choose artwork based on variety. They choose from print making, which is artwork transferred from blocks of wood, abstract art and ceramics. Mulcahy said that edgy art is also chosen from time to time.
The featured artist in the gallery is Roger Clayton. Mulcahy said that Clayton's style is gouache which is an opaque water color.
Clayton will be hosting a gallery talk on Sept. 19, at 10:10 a.m. in the Rochelle Center of the Library. Students will be able to meet Clayton and discuss his work.
Mulcahy added that Vol State offers about seven shows a year. One of the fall shows features work from the art department faculty.
One of the spring art shows features work from Vol State art students. This is very competitive and is judged by an outside critic. Between two and three hundred students submit work for this show, but only 50 pieces are chosen.
