Once considered the primary authority on American agriculture, Gilbert Fite, Eastern's fourth sitting president, died at the age of 92 on July 13. He was born and raised in South Dakota, but has been living in Fort Myers, Fla. since his retirement. He is survived by his wife, June; his two sons; and grandchildren.

Richard Essner, assistant professor in the Biological Sciences department, published a research paper that is now receiving international recognition. His research is about frogs being able to jump before they could land.
"People have suggested that swimming and jumping are similar behavior," Essner said.

Cougar Lake Pool, slated to close three weeks before the normal closing date of Labor Day due to budget issues, has not gone without resistance.
Administration officials have cited budget concerns as the primary cause, saying the pool has developed a $35,000 deficit over the past five years due to a decline in memberships and general use.

SIU President Glenn Poshard asked the chancellors of SIUE and SIU Carbondale to develop plans for furloughs for the universities by September.
Director of Public Affairs Greg Conroy said there are no plans for furloughs even though Poshard asked the chancellors to study the possibility.

Eastern received a figure close to $6 million on July 9, from the state, reducing the university's fiscal year 2010 budget deficit by 12 percent. The money received is a reimbursement from the state and will help avoid a monetary gap predicted for August. Prior to the state's reimbursement, Eastern's Board of Trustees was contemplating borrowing a credit line of $7 million to address the monetary gap.
